The S281 'Extreme' variant is primarily differentiated by the power plant within: it is powered by a Supercharged 4.6L V8 that produces 550hp and 525 lb-ft of torque. These are large numbers even in the present time, and were quite significant back when new in 2006-2007. The supercharger is a Saleen Series VI Integrated Screw Type Supercharger, and is mechanically complemented by a Dual Stage Water to Air Intercooled System, Saleen Forged Aluminum Pistons, Saleen Forged Steel Connecting Rods, a Saleen Forged Steel Crankshaft, and Ported Aluminum Cylinder Heads. A Saleen Performance Dual-Core Radiator and High Flow Cooling System are also present, along with a PowerFlash Calibration, Performance Air Filter, and a 2 1/2" Performance Center Exhaust.

The engine is mated to a 6-Speed Manual Transmission, which features a High Performance Clutch, Lightweight Aluminum Flywheel, Balanced Aluminum Driveshaft, and a Saleen Maxgrip Differential with a 4.10:1 Gear Ratio. For suspension, the S281 Extreme sports a Saleen Racecraft Suspension, including Saleen Specific Linear Rate Front and Rear Springs, Saleen Front Struts (N2), Saleen Rear Shocks (N2), Boxed Lower Control Arms, a Three Link Live Rear Axle with Panhard Rod, and a Saleen Front Sway Bar + Pivot Bushings.
